Back at the end of the war, two of the biggest names in viticulture in Riquewihr, Ren Dopff and the widow Irion, joined forces to found Dopff & Irion. Over the generations, the Dopff and Irion families, whose interest in the vineyards can be traced back to the 16th century, developed and nurtured their precious heritage - the vines and the Chateau of Riquewihr.Dopff & Irion estate comprises all the diversity of the appellations, grape varieties, grands crus, parcel selections and specialties that the vineyards of Alsace have to offer. Dopff & Irion cultivate 27 hectares (66.7 acres) of vines at Riquewihr, which is a relatively large estate in view of the fragmented structure of the vineyards in Alsace, with some 60% of producers farming less than one hectare.Riquewihrs vineyards sit on one of the principal geo-logical fractures in Alsace. The vast mosaic of soils andsubsoils(marl,limestone,gypsum,clay,sand-stone)allowmultipleexpressionsofterroirinthe wines. It is for this reason that five A.O.C.
